2008 Winning Designs (2 of 20)

“Jet Stream” • 8’ x 7’ x 18’ • painted steel

Artist: Nicole Beck

Sponsor: Saint Joseph Hospital

Location: Diversey & Inner Lake Shore Drive

Beck has explored many mediums over the years, but her poetic vision has been a distillation of the dynamic systems found in nature. Jet Stream was designed out of a body of work that explored abstract metaphors for astronomical physics and dynamics. Her works are well-crafted, large-scale sculptures with a warm, organic flair. The 18-foot long channel beam that pierces Jet Stream’s hole and upholds and levers the sculpture at a dynamic angle simulates atmospheric jet streams.

Nicole Beck has completed many public sculpture commissions and is exhibited nationwide. She received her MFA from Northern Illinois University. Nicole has served as a Lead Artist and as a Teaching Artist to young people through several not-for-profi t organizations. Nicole’s own works are on display in many public and private collections.
