2007 Winning Designs (1 of 15)

“Emergence #17” • 12’ x 10’ x 9’ • steel

Artist: Eric Stephenson

Sponsor: Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce and SSA #8

Location: Roscoe and Broadway

Eric Stephenson’s objects explore the connections formed when diverse spaces are juxtaposed. He uses the body as a means of surveying space, contrasting the organic and the man-made. His work investigates the point of transition that occurs when these conditions collide. The artifacts represent a time line - or singularly, a time piece - which reveals a strong connection to process. The finishes emphasize the effects of aging and time; while the human form emerges from these artifacts in a seemingly timeless state.

Stephenson is a fifth generation artist who has worked in foundries in Montana, Texas and Massachusetts and currently has a studio in Chicago. In addition, he continues to hone his craft as a studio assistant to Richard Hunt while pursuing the development of his own work.
